Herzlich willkommen zum Newsletter des NETZWERK-Lipolyse

    Dear Reader,

The new NETWORK Newsletter contains 8 topics which we believe will be of importance and interest to you. The ATX-101 Phase 3 study has started and demonstrates that, following the Lipostabil N® reregistration disaster, there are still pharmaceutical manufacturers (Intendis/Bayer®) who have faith in the enormous potential of minimally invasive fat reduction by injection.

We also wish to inform you of other NETWORK developments, such as the NWM-MesoMel ready-made mixture, the MesoRoller planning and the lipolysis workshop in Beijing, plus the advance preview of lecture and course dates.

I wish you enjoyable reading and look forward to your feedback.

With best regards from the NETWORK Team

       Injection lipolysis:
Lipostabil N® no longer available on the market

    to top

NETWORK members have alternative treatment options.
"Lipostabil N® ampoules are no longer marketable for formal reasons." ...

... The firm of Klosterfrau, which distributes Lipostabil N® in Germany, has sent the following notice to the Medicinal Products Commission of the German Pharmacists [Arzneimittelkommission der Deutschen Apotheker] (extract):
"With immediate effect, Lipostabil N® ampoules are no longer marketable for formal reasons. This is because of an administrative court ruling in connection with the reregistration procedure. This had nothing to do with the pharmaceutical quality, efficacy or safety of the product. We ask you to check your stocks...."

However, NETWORK members and patients have no need to worry: it is possible to have the ingredients contained in Lipostabil N® made up pharmaceutically into an injection solution, whose lipolytic effect is in no way inferior to the original substance and indeed whose efficacy has in fact been enhanced by the addition of further substances (formula magistralis).

       Mesotherapy:
       MesoMel undergoing testing

Our new formula for the treatment of melasma ...

It has taken a long time to bring our formulation to galenic perfection. Our producer spent more than six months working on the right composition till both he and we were happy with the result. At the present time, the new ready-made mixture is undergoing initial testing by Dr. Weidmann.

We will keep you informed of developments.

        Lipolysis:
       ATX-101 from Kythera/Intendis in Phase 3 study
    to top

    Initial results expected shortly

There is a lot going on in the lipolysis segment at the moment. Lipostabil N® has gone from the market, but at the same time the Bayer subsidiary Intendis has invested some 350 million dollars in a cooperation with the US start-up venture Kythera with the aim of obtaining European registration for subcutaneous lipolysis ...

And who or what is behind Kythera?
Kythera has been created through the acquisition of patents, in particular from Adam Rotunda, Los Angeles University. Rotunda was the first person to identify desoxycholic acid (DOC) as an the agent in Lipostabil. As a result, desoxycholic acid was patented by Rotunda and a number of others for use in subcutaneous lipolysis.

What is our opinion regarding this venture?
On the one hand, we naturally welcome the fact that efforts are being undertaken to make a drug available for injection lipolysis that will one day be licensed. That would ultimately be the crowning glory to the work of the many NETWORK members, for without our many and varied activities, this process would never have got started.

However, we take a highly view of using desoxycholic acid without phosphatidylcholine (PPC). As the Regensburg study has shown, the aggressive (cell toxic) effect of DOC is toned down by PPC. If DOC is used by itself, this is no longer the case, with the result that greater side-effects have to be reckoned with. It also ignores the influence of PPC on the metabolization of the lipids once they have been released.

And a final point is the probable price of the new drug, which can be expected to be many times higher than that of Lipostabil N®. And the question of the effect still remains open. If the effect should be greater, the whole business will be worthwhile; but if the effect is only the same, or not even as good as Lipostabil N® - the formula magistralis will continue to play a major role in future, as we can assume that people will not be willing to pay excessive prices for a simple substance. First, though, the drug has to get over the hurdle of registration.

        Lipolysis / China:
Lipolysis workshop with Dr. Hao in Beijing
    to top

More than 50 participants learned the NETWORK protocol ...

Dr. Justin HaoIn a 2-day seminar, Dr. Hao and NETWORK speaker Dirk Brandl informed the participants about the NETWORK as well as about injection lipolysis, aesthetic mesotherapy and the Vita-Balance treatment. In China, acceptance of minimally invasive therapies lags far behind the Western world. Chinese doctors continue to focus on surgical procedures for aesthetic correction purposes.

The participants were more than a little surprised by the latest developments in aesthetic medicine, where the number of surgical procedures is stagnating or even declining as the patients give preference to the minimally invasive possibilities. A trend in this direction is also clearly emerging in China.

       MesoRoller

New MesoRoller for accurate needling in planning ...

Needling is being used for an increasing number of indications. We were already contacted by members last year, asking whether we could research the possibilities for reducing the very high material costs.

We have looked at all the products available on the market. One outcome is that, especially where rollers are concerned, there is indeed potential for reducing the costs through intelligent solutions.

More on this in the near future.

Independent and objective information preferred ...

Word has meanwhile got round that, despite the high fees, our training programmes have a great deal to offer practitioners in the field of aesthetic medicine: namely carefully prepared Powerpoint presentations with independent information, and excellent hands-on training.

On 9 April, the first workshop took place devoted to the topic of botulin toxin A; it was led by Academy member Dr. Michael Weidmann, an acknowledged expert in the field of BTX treatment. Dr. Weidmann had planned and organized the course so that both beginners and practitioners already using BTX would get their money’s worth. In the course, Dr. Weidmann presented all the latest developments and all the injection points which his experience has shown him to be meaningful in the context of aesthetic treatment. Conversion of the various products available on the market was also explained.

This year, in addition to our Aesthetic Holidays on Majorca from 23 - 26 June (the weekend following Corpus Christi), the Globalhealth Academy is offering some further courses, about which more information below.
